According to Ayurveda, the skin is a mirror of what is happening within the body. Wrong lifestyle, dietary choices and not living in line with the season can cause a disturbance in the bodily equilibrium. So whatever is out of balance inside will also manifest outside. In Ayurvedic terms, Acne is referred to as Yauyan Pidika and Acne can not only affect the face it can further be spread out the shoulder, the back, and the chest. Acne can be caused by all three doshas Vata, Pitta or Kapha.
When there is too much dryness caused by air in the body the oil within the body will dry out and consequently, the body cannot lubricate and moisturize the skin anymore. This results in milia, blackheads and clogged pores. A Vata skin needs to be well moisturized, however defeating Acne goes beyond only applying skin care products.
The overall lubrication of the body needs to be increased by drinking more fluids and eating a moist diet for Vata types. Regarding lifestyle choices also stress should be kept at bay as the water-metabolism is governed by the kidneys. So through slowing down, practicing grounding yoga or meditation one can restore moisture again. For aiding that process Abhyanga is a beautiful technique, which encompasses oleation of the entire body with warm sesame oil.
Pitta acne is caused by an excess of heat and fire within the body, which shows in inflamed and red papules and pustules. That inner fire can be calmed down by using cooling and hydrating skin care products including Aloe Vera, chamomile, turmeric, neem, rosewater… etc.
To avoid inflammation in the G.I. tract one should avoid heating foods such as deep-fried dishes, alcohol, hot spices, nightshades, and acidic forming fruits.
To keep a cool mind for Pitta it is also good to focus on breathing this not only cools down the mind also physically oxygen has a tremendous effect on the body by purifying the blood and promoting cool air.
Kapha is responsible for lubrication and moisture in the body. So if Kapha is in excess there is too much mucus, wetness, oiliness, and dampness in the body. Acne of this type is often painful cysts or pimples which are filled with pus and fluids. They usually appear around the jawline and the chin. An imbalance in the reproductive organs can also lead to blemishes.
To treat cysts the skin usually need to be punctured. Skincare products that help to increase circulation will stimulate breaking up of the cysts and pimples.
Internally one should focus on removing dairy products, which helps to reduce fungus and candida. Further foods such as sugar, yeast, and fermented products aggravate this dosha.
