Renewal and rejuvenation time
Spring is invigorating, animals in nature slim down, losing their winter fat, and we humans, naturally should move in the same direction. The sunlight and warmth slowly comes back. Ayurveda honors that “change within” and supports the body with many tools for deep cleansing. If your hanger is less than usual, or if you feel heavy and dull two hours after a meal, these are indications that your digestive fire is burning low. We do not want that!
Ayurveda also recommends a daily detox (daily routine called dinacharya) in order to maintain long term health. If you don’t have your routine yet, spring is the best time to incorporate it.
Add these 6 detox tips into your daily life to feel lighter and energized!
1- Scrap your tongue
Before brushing your teeth, is good to scrap your tongue first thing in the morning. You would be more aware of your toxin levels, when there is some coating it is a clear sign of Ama (toxins, undigested food) in the digestive system. This daily practice will increase your oral health, including your teeth and sinuses while it increases your digestion. At the same you will give a gentle massage to your organs. 2- Drink Warm Water on empty stomach
After washing your teeth you can drink a glass of warm/hot water on empty stomach. Depending of your constitution you can add fresh ginger, fresh curcuma (with a tinny pinch of black pepper) the juice of half a lemon or lime. Beside cleansing your digestive tract it will activate your bowel movement in order to expel the waste material out. At the same time your agni (digestive fire) will wake up for better metabolization.
3- Herbal infusions to protect your Metabolism:
Drink warm herbal infusions along the day between meals. Ginger, cinnamon, tulsi, mint work well. There is great “tea” to burn Ama which is very famous and its tridoshic called CCF (Cumin, coriander, fennel seeds infusion in equal parts)
4- Add herbs and spices to increase your agni
The goal of the culinary herbs and spices besides enhancing the flavor of the meals, is to increase or balance your digestive fire, protecting our enzymes. Herbs like basil, mint, rosemary, coriander, parsley, oregano, estragon, sage, thyme, and spices as ginger, turmeric, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, cardamom, cumin. etc. In case your Pitta dosha has the tendency of being imbalanced, you should try to choose the ones which are not very that hot in potency.
5- Dry skin Brushing
Your skin is the largest organ for elimination, just like your colon, kidneys, and liver. Dry brushing helps keep the pores clear and the skin active to assist the body in this cleansing process. It also helps to increase blood circulation activating your lymphatic system, exfoliating and providing more moisture for the skin. The Ayurvedic secret for enhancing your natural glow is through the use of raw silk Garshana gloves. They keep Vata and Pitta constitutions in balance. 6- Abhyanga. Oil self-massage
You should only perform self-massage on the days you do not perform dry brushing. Warm your specific doshic oil, and apply it on the direction of the body hair 2 to 3 times a week. Take a hot shower afterwards. It helps improve circulation as well, activating the lymphatic system, towards detoxification while lubricates the tissues. Read more about this amazing practice here!
Instead of adopting all six practices at once, you can incorporate one per week during the first few weeks of spring. If you take the time to turn each action into a habit, it will be easier to stick with your detox routine throughout the entire year.
